You have never seen food devoured as fast and furious as how the servers can attack a plate of food. For each shift, we make a “this is how it looks and tastes” sample of whatever special we are running. It helps with their enthusiasm when describing the special to the customer.
Once the servers get wind of the sample plate being made, they start circling. It’s kinda like chumming for sharks. And, like chumming for sharks, you don’t want to risk any body parts so you kind of chuck the plate at them and jump back. It’s all about self-preservation.
